Minimum Age: 16 yrs (For issue of licence).
Certification: At the end of the course students will undertake a short written exam to qualify them with the Short Range Certificate. After the successful completion of this exam you will be issued with the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Certificate of Competence and Authority to Operate". There is an exam fee payable directly to the RYA on the day.
Course Overview: The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels. On the course you will gain knowledge of GMDSS systems and be taught the operation of modern DSC VHF radios.
Cost: £115.00 + SRC Exam Certificate fee of £60.
Itinerary: 0900 until approximately 1700.

The RYA SRC/VHF Radio course will instruct you in VHF (Very High Frequency) and DSC (Digital Selective Calling) radio units. You will learn about the correct channel usage, the correct Safety, Urgent and Distress procedures to use, along with what is meant by GMDSS (Global Marine Distress and Safety System) and how it can help you out on the water.
To achieve this students will be using a credited RYA VHF DSC radio simulator Mk3 along with Icom IC – M241 Training radios.
Course topics include:
•the basics of radio operation
•the correct frequencies (channels) to be used
•distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
•making ship to shore telephone calls
•Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators
•Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
•Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
•Search and Rescue (SART)
