Cruising is one of the safest leisure sporting activities, and 99.9% of those afloat will never use their liferaft. However, if you are part of the unlucky 0.1% your chances of survival will be greatly increased if you understand how to use the equipment and how to help yourself.

The course covers a mixture of theory and practical elements. In the morning you will be taught the theory of sea survival, including how to launch a liferaft, what the initial and subsequent actions in a raft are, along with longer term survival. Other topics covered include the design of lifejackets, hypothermia and Search and Rescue techniques.

In the afternoon, the training moves into the practical elements of sea survival, in the comfort of a heated indoor swimming pool. Experience first hand launching, righting  and entering a liferaft. Firstly from the side of the pool, moving to climbing into a liferaft from in the water.  During the practical session you will also be taught in the water personal and group survival techniques.

Course topics include:

  1. liferafts and the equipment they contain

  2. survival techniques

  3. the design of lifejackets

  4. medical aspects of sea survival

  5. search and rescue techniques
