Certification: At the completion of the course you will be able download your PPR certificate. This certificate is valid until your commercial endorsement is due for renewal (normally every five years). 


Course Overview: A compulsory online course for new and revalidating RYA Commercial Endorsement holders.

Exemptions from this course

If you hold an MCA Certificate of Competence as Officer of the Watch, Master 200, Master 500 or above you do not need to take the PPR course.


This course fulfils the requirements for the following endorsements:


  1. RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence

  2. RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence

  3. RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence

  4. RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence

  5. RYA Advanced Powerboat Course Completion Certificate (only if issued before 1st Jan 2005)

  6. RYA Powerboat Level 2

  7. RYA Day Skipper practical (non-tidal) supported by Day Skipper shorebased

  8. RYA Day Skipper practical (tidal waters only)


The course is broken down into four modules:

  1. Commercial environment - showing how you fit into the professional maritime world.

  2. People – explaining the importance of correct manning, keeping your skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessels.

  3. Vessel – teaching about the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment and how to create and implement risk control and operating procedures.

  4. Purpose – making sure your vessel is suitable and legal for the work you are carrying out, your obligations in protecting the environment, appropriate planning and situational awareness.

We estimate users will take around 6 to 8 hours to work through the four course modules. This can be done in as many visits as you wish.

Following the modules there is a mock assessment so you can check you are ready before moving on to the final graded online assessment.

The graded end of course assessment is split into two sections, each with a maximum time limit of  one hour.

Instructional help during the course:


During the course we will provide email support to help direct you through small issues with the course. Most of the answers to your questions will be found by working your way through the 4 modules.


In the event that you wish to have separate coaching with a PPR instructor we will charge £40 inc. VAT per hour.
