Duration:  5 consecutive days or 3 weekends.


Previous Experience Required: None.

Basic Safety & Navigation would be useful.


Certification: At the end of the course students are awarded with an RYA Day Skipper theory course certificate.


Course Overview: This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.


Cost:  £375.00.


Itinerary: 0900 until approximately 1700.

The RYA Day Skipper theory course  is designed for those of you who have little or no experience of the theory side of helming a sailing yacht or motor boating. During the course we will cover the basics of inshore and coastal navigation. Including pilotage, chart work, position fixing, plotting a course to steer, weather forecasting, a knowledge of tides and the International Regulations for Prevention of Collision at Sea.


Course topics include:

  2. the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage

  3. chart work

  4. electronic charts

  5. position fixing

  6. plotting a course to steer

  7. weather forecasting and meteorology

  8. tides

  9. collision regulations

  10. construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat

  11. emergency and safety procedures including distress calls,use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts.
